Monofilament Madness Postponed

Due to Hurricane Sandy, Monofilament Madness and the Environmental EXPO scheduled to be held on Saturday, October 27 has been postponed until next Saturday, November 3.

The annual event sponsored by Keep Lee County Beautiful will be held at Fish Tale Marina, 7225 Estero Blvd. on November 3 starting at 8am. Islanders are invited to use their kayak or boat to help clean the back bay of monofilament fishing line and other debris from 8-11:30 am. A free lunch will be provided to volunteers. From 11:30am-4pm the Environmental EXPO at Fish Tale Marina will feature speakers from Ostego Bay, Turtle Time, Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Keep Lee County Beautiful, FGCU and the Town of Fort Myers Beach. The Fort Myers Beach Fire Control District teamed up with the Citizen Emergency Response Team and Semmer Electric to highlight Fire Prevention Week on Monday in Time Square. Shown here are Lt. Ron Martin of the FMBFCD and Max Williams of Semmer Electric. They will also make an appearance on Wednesday at Bonita Bill’s from 9am-3pm.

Estero BaySan Carlos Sewer Spill

Estero Bay was declared safe for swimming and fishing on Sunday after two days of normal test results following a sewage spill on San Carlos Island. Early Friday morning, 100,000 gallons of raw sewage from a broken 25 year old, 2-foot force main pipe spilled onto Main Street and into Estero Bay via a storm drain.

The spill caused Main Street to be closed between San Carlos Blvd and South St. for several hours. Lee County Utilities brought in septic trucks to transport the sewage until the break could be repaired late Friday evening.
