Fort Myers Beach is a wonderful community. We are a small island town filled with folks who look out for each other, take care of each other and who take pride in the fact that they are Islanders. But, especially during the sleepy summer off-season, some seem to forget that we are different from most small towns in that our community also serves as a playground to those who come from far and wide to enjoy our emerald waters and white sandy beach. While the vast majority of our visitors love and respect our island as much as we do, there are some who come over our bridges with darker intentions in mind.

Council Hears Summary of
2014 Legislative Session

At a workshop on Monday morning, the Town Council of Fort Myers Beach listened to an interesting summary on the state's 2014 Legislative Session from the Town's lobbyist in Tallahassee, Keith Arnold. They also held joint meetings with both the Audit Committee and the Bay Oaks Recreation Center Advisory Board (BORCAB).

"Overall, this was an uncontroversial year, with a relatively small amount of bills that were passed,” Arnold began. "Issues with local governments' autonomy surface every year, and it's our job to address these. Some of these have merit - those that involve the health and welfare of the citizens of Florida - but quite often the state goes beyond that."

For Day Long Planning Session

On Monday, members of Town Council, Town Manager Don Stilwell, representatives from the Town's advisory committees, Town staff and residents - including three former mayors and the President of the Beach Chamber of Commerce - attended an all day Strategic Planning retreat. Held in the new Beach Library's generously proportioned community room, the retreat was facilitated by former city manager and current Florida Gulf Coast University Professor of Public Finance and Budgeting Bob Lee.

Chamber ExpoExpo Spotlights Area Businesses

The Greater Fort Myers Beach Chamber of Commerce will host a Business Expo on Thursday, June 19th from 4-7pm at the Residence Inn. Over 30 area businesses will be exhibiting at the Expo, offering deals and incentives to attendees. Everyone is invited to stop by and get to know and support local businesses. Admission is free to this annual event that gives area businesses a chance to connect with each other and local residents. The Residence Inn is providing complimentary hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
