Fort Myers Beach to Hold
Sand Sculpting World Championships
Fans of sand sculpting will get a special treat this fall as our emerald shores are going to play host to two events in November, one of which is going to be the World Championship event for 2011!
First, from Novermber 2-6, will be the American Sand Sculpting Championship, hosted by the Greater Fort Myers Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. 16 of the world's top master sand sculptors will compete, along with a street party and activities at night. The event, formerly held behind the Holiday Inn at the island's south end, is being moved to a more mid-island location – something that organizers hope will keep folks around even after it gets dark. Stay tuned to www.sandsculptingfestival.com to see everything that's being planned.
Two weeks later, on November 17, the 2011 World Chamionship of Sand Sculpting begins. This event is nothing short of the Olympics of sand sculpting, and many sculptors compete all year just to qualify. It is a testament to the quality of our pristine white sand that Fort Myers Beach has been granted the honor of being the host of the biggest sand sculpting festival of the year, which will last until November 27.
The World Championship event, being organized by Big C productions, will be held on the wide beach behind the Holiday Inn and promises to be the biggest event this island has ever seen, bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time of the year when local businesses need it the most.
"It's the Super Bowl of sand sculpting; and the fact that we can bring it into this area and put the focus on it – it's going to benefit the businesses and the community as a whole,” said event organizer Jason Camp.
