PTO's Annual Golf TournamentFor Our Beach Kids

As the island’s elementary students complete FCAT and prepare for the last month of school, parents and teachers are gearing up for the once-a-year fundraiser. The precursor to the Beach Elementary PTO’s annual golf tournament is a party and silent auction at Nervous Nellie’s Crazy Waterfront Eatery and Ugly’s Upstairs, this Saturday, April 27th from 1 to 5 p.m.

"The PTO does one fundraiser per year and we do it right!” said event organizer Ginger Weber. "For safety reasons, we do not want to send the kids out door-to-door selling cookies and wrapping paper. This also leaves them time to spend on community service projects instead.”

Saturday’s party at Nervous Nellie’s, 1131 First Street, is open to the public and admission is $5 which includes a complimentary wine or beer. The first raffle drawing happens at 2 p.m. and silent auction items will be available for inspection throughout the afternoon. Final bids on all auction items are scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Items donated from local businesses include a two-night stay at Lighthouse Resort Inn and Suites, four one-day passes to Disney Parks, Fish Monger gift certificates, family portraits from Cason Photography and much more. Minimum bids for these items start as low as $40.

There are also raffle items available from Crazy Woman Kayaks, Charlie’s Boat House, The Fish House, Pincher’s, Mid-Island Water Sports and more. There are four raffle drawings planned for the PTO’s pre-tournament party.

"We appreciate all of our gracious sponsors and donors, also those families and individuals who support our school by purchasing raffle tickets and bidding on the auction items,” explained Weber. "It shows how our community comes together to support education.”

Beach Baptist, 100 Connecticut Street, is offering affordable childcare for $5 per child or $10 per family, during the event. Drop off begins at 12:30 p.m. and care will be provided, including a bounce house and food, until 5:30 p.m. Reservations are requested by phone call to Morgan at 270-860-3180.

Profits from the silent auction and raffle ticket sales, plus proceeds from the May 4th golf scramble, will directly benefit students and teachers at Fort Myers Beach Elementary School. "We are looking forward to a successful event that will not only be full of fun and lots of prizes, it is all to benefit our special island school,” said Weber.

Nervous Nellie’s has served as host of the PTO’s pre-tournament party for several years. They are providing light hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment for the event, as well as a complimentary drink with ticket purchase.

"It’s the most fun you’ll have all year helping our children,” said fourth grade teacher and PTO Vice-president Cathy Trent. She should know as she’s been volunteering in that capacity since joining Beach Elementary more than six years ago.

The PTO Golf Scramble is set for Saturday, May 4th at the Fort Myers Beach Golf Club with an 8 a.m. start. The Scramble includes a ball drop, raffle and cash prizes as well as beverages and a luncheon at the Golf Club. As of press time, there were just a few spots left for the golf tourney. Call now to reserve your spot! If you want to participate, contact Shawn at 239-247-1029.

"Thanks to everyone for helping support our school and our kids,” added Principal Larry Wood.
