PopeyePalooza V Almost Here!
What has become one of the island's
favorite traditions returns to the beach next weekend, as
Popeyepalooza V will be held at the Beach Pub on Sunday, June 22nd
beginning at noon. This locally loved annual event benefits the Fort
Myers Beach Soccer Club, and host and founder Michael 'Popeye'
Deardon says he thinks this year will be the biggest event yet.
"I'm so excited about my new
partnership with Beach Pub owners Lou Caleca and Tim Miller,” he
said. "We've got a great lineup of musicians, and our headliner -
Jeremy White - is the coach of the soccer league this year.”
Popeyepalooza V will feature White,
Tommy Van Oyen, John Hyatt and Timmy Johnston of 10,000 Views and the
John Allender Band. In addition to the delicious BBQ that will be
offered for donations, folks can also participate in a silent
auction, corn hole tournament, 50/50 and door prize raffles.
Deardon gave us a sneak peek at some
of the raffle items he's already collected from generous local
businesses, and they are wonderful!
"We've got a Shakespeare 7' Shore
Caster rod/reel and tackle combo, a couple of 2-night stays at some
beach villas and a whole bunch of restaurant/hotel packages,” he
said. "I can't believe how generous everyone is being - I think
this year we're going to raise more money than ever!”
Popeye is particularly pleased that
this year his event is getting back up from the Florida Helps
Foundation, a 501c3 organization that will allow those making cash
contributions over $250 to write the gifts off on their tax bills.
"Anyone who wants to do that needs
to make the checks out to 'Florida Helps Foundation' and put 'Fort
Myers Beach Soccer Club' on the notation line,” he told us. "They
reimburse the charity penny for penny, and that way it's tax
Anyone wishing to make a donation can
mail their checks to Popeyepalooza, PO Box 6103, Fort Myers Beach,
"We raise over $1,000 every year for
beach soccer, and this year I'm looking to eclipse that number,”
Popeye said. "And I'm so glad to be holding the event at the Beach
Pub - it's going to be a great day!”
