New Program at Bay Oaks

Things are changing over at Bay Oaks Recreational Campus. Thanks to the dedication of their hardworking staff and the vision of new Parks and Recreation Director Patti Evans, the 'island's best kept secret' is slowly but surely becoming a secret no more, with new programs being added and extra effort going into promotion of this wonderful community center. For those readers who may be unaware, the following is a summation of the exciting things being offered for the month of April:

Senior Cycle/Flexibility/Toning Class

Participants warm up with a 15-minutes of cycling to music, followed by flexibility coordination and toning segments especially designed for seniors. The class is held every Wednesday and Friday at 10am. $6 for members, $8 for non-members.

Senior Yoga "Tai Chair” Class

Seniors enjoy beginner's yoga stretches and basic tai chi movement while improving muscle tone and balance. The 30-minute session includes the use of a chair for most exercises, and is being taught by Jack Barone. Class costs $6 for Bay Oaks members, $8 for non-members and is held every Thursday morning at 10am.

Inline Roller Hockey for Kids

This is an introductory class designed to introduce kids between the ages of 7-13 to the sport of hockey. Classes are 60 minutes long with 20 minutes of stick and balls skills and 20 minutes of fun games and scrimmages. Skills taught will include forward stride, backward stride, starting and stopping, balance, transitions, pivoting, turning, edgework, proper use of a hockey stick, stick handling of a hockey ball, passing, receiving and shooting. Class is held every Wednesday from 7pm to 8pm. $10 for non-members and $8 for members.

Total Body Tune-Up

This is designed to help kick folks back into shape. Total Body Tune-Up with Cardio Kickboxing will offer a new challenge to participants regardless of fitness level. The class combines a warm-up period, body weight resistance exercises, circuit training, cardio kickboxing and a cool down mediation period. Tuesdays from 7pm to 8pm, Wednesdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and Saturdays from 2pm to 3pm. $6 for members, $8 for non-members.

Senior Drop-In Softball

These are pick-up games offered free of charge for anyone 55 years old and up. Bring your glove and be prepared to have a good time! Every Thursday morning at 10am.

RPM Fitness Spin

Looking for a different way to exercise? Try RPM Spin – where participants ride a stationary bike to tunes guaranteed to get the pulse racing. Each class is 45 minutes long and are being offered five days a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8am, Thursday at 6pm and Saturday at 10am. Classes cost $6 for members and $8 for non-members, or folks can choose a monthly rate of $70 or $90 and come to all the classes.


Low-impact aerobics is offered every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:30am. $7 for members and $9 for non-members, or sign up for a month at the rate of $39 or $48.

Line Dancing

Line Dancing is being taught by Lu Carter and is quickly becoming a favorite at Bay Oaks. Offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9am to 10am, Tuesday's class teaches the cha-cha, the Charleston, waltz and a few more favorites while Thursday's class is more salsa – a combination of Zumba, Line Dance, Salsa, Cha-Cha, Cumbia and Meringue all performed to Latin music. $4 for members and $5 for non-members.


Zumba class is held every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm for those over 18. Experience is not necessary. $4 for members and $5 for non-members.


Enjoy the process of strengthening the body and improving flexibility while exercising with a Professional Certified Instructor. The class includes a blend of yoga postures and pilates exercises, with cardio intervals. Focused breathing and relaxation techniques are also taught. Hand weights are provided along with mats. Cost for the full 10-week (20 class) session is $120 for members and $165 for non-members, or individual classes are $10 and $12. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 10am.

Water Aerobics

Water aerobics consists of large rhythmic movements done in water to increase heart rate and improve cardiovascular fitness. The resistance of water adds toning and strengthening to major muscle groups. Classes are held at the Beach Pool every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am to 10am in chest deep water. $4 for members and $5 for non-members.
