Summer Solstice and a Supermoon –
Two Great Reasons to Party This Saturday!
Summer Solstice Party at Nervous Nellies
Want to start the summer off in true island style? Then check out these two parties that are guaranteed to be hotter than Estero Boulevard in July:
First, head down to Nervous Nellies this Saturday for their Summer Solstice Party featuring giveaways from Gator Country and live music from Trevor Clerico, Dave Collaton and Backlash.
"We saw that the first day of summer fell on a Saturday this year and since we were having a wedding reception upstairs and we didn't want anyone bothering them, we decided to throw a party on the back deck,” said Nervous Nellies Manager Steve D'Angelis. "We've got Trevor Clerico kicking the party off, followed by Dave and then Backlash. Also, Scott and Val from the Gator Country morning show will be here talking to everyone, along with Gator John who will be bringing his live alligators along with some other critters.”
The event begins at noon and goes until 10pm, and there is no charge to attend.
"We're going to have raffles, giveaways and all kinds of fun stuff all day long,” Steve told us. "And drink specials – including the popular 'Gator in a Glass', seven kinds of rum and you get to keep the glass!”
And all this is happening along Nervous Nellies' expansive docks with the soft Back Bay breezes!
Full Moon Party at Matanzas
As the revelry begins to wind down on the docks, folks will no doubt notice a particularly large full moon rising in the night sky. Called a 'Supermoon', Saturday night's full moon will be the closest to the Earth as it will get for all of 2013. So what better way to celebrate this once-in-a-year event then having a party that people will talk about all year? That's what the folks at the Matanzas Inn and Resort thought, so they decided to have a 'Full Moon' party to benefit a great local charity – the Find A Home, Give A Home pet rescue foundation.
From 6pm to 10pm, the Upper Deck of Matanzas' restaurant will be turned into a moon masterpiece complete with Moon Pies, Lunar Pizzas, Blood Moon coladas, Moon Fever drinks and specials on Blue Moon beer.
"Everything on Saturday will be themed 'Full Moon',” said Karen Campbell, better known as K.C. and a veteran of Full Moon parties. "We're going to have '70's and '80's themed music, and we are encouraging those who come to dress as their favorite 'creature of the night' – zombies, werewolves, vampires, whatever.”
All throughout the night raffle tickets will be sold with the money raised going to Find A Home, Give A Home. Prizes are for everything from certificates to local restaurants, handmade local jewelry and clothing to goofy items like a big block of 'moon' (swiss) cheese.
"Dave's even donating a couple of neon bar signs from the old Dockside!” K.C. Told us. "We are also going to have a costume contest with both a male and female winner who will receive either a two-night stay at Matanzas Inn or a two-night stay at the Sunshine Island Inn out on Sanibel where I work during the day. Both winners will get a special bottle of wine from 'Wine Shop at Home', a company that specializes in small, boutique vineyards.”
People need to make sure to have their dancing shoes on, too. The biggest 'thrill' of Saturday's Full Moon party will be a dance contest to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' with the winner receiving a $50 gift card to Matanzas.
"We've gotten such a great response for this, and I'm so grateful to everyone!” said K.C. Anyone interested in making a donation for the raffle is asked to call her at 239-789-7066.
