When Salty Sam's announced the arrival of their new Marketing Director Jaime Huffman, the local media focused on her experiences on the hit CBS series 'Survivor'. She spent nearly two months proving herself on a desolate, dangerous island, and somehow, after a long and winding road in her young life, ended up on another island altogether, right here.

Ponce de Leon's FloridaVIVA Florida Celebrates 500 Years

Florida is celebrating a milestone this year.500 years ago, on April 2,1513, Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon landed on the east coast of Florida– thinking at first he'd discovered another island in the Bahamian chain – named the land 'La Florida' (Land of Flowers) in honor of the Easter holiday. This was 107 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock, making Florida the first state to be discovered by Europeans and the birthplace of what would become the United States of America.

A Community Treasure

At 2755 Estero Boulevard stands a magnificent white structure, graced with a prominent tide clock and surrounded by native plants. It serves as a community resource, center for information, hub of learning, source of refuge and relaxation, and gathering place: the new Fort Myers Beach Library (FMBL).

The fruit of over 8 years of planning and hard work, guided by impassioned library and Fort Myers Beach advocate, Dr. Leroy Hommerding, this treasure that is our new library officially opened in October 2012, and came into full use on January 14, 2013.

Time SquareTime Square May Receive Upgrade Soon

On Monday afternoon, the Town Council of Fort Myers Beach held a workshop where they discussed the various Interlocal Agreements that the Town is engaged in before hearing a report from staff as to the conditions of the infrastructure in Time Square.

Council studied a worksheet provided by staff that listed the more than 30 agreements the Town holds with either Lee County or the state of Florida - including three that expired at the end of the 2011/2012 fiscal year - as Town Manager Terry Stewart and Public Works Director Cathie Lewis explained the nature of each one.
